Homemade Mulling Spices - Tip of the Day

Making your own mulling spices isn't just a good rainy-day activity -- it's also a great way to experiment with seasonal flavors.

Opting for pre-made mulling spices can mean forking over as much as $20 -- a steep price to pay for a simple, easy-to-make drink infusion. The easy answer: Make them at home for far less cash and more customization.

There are two main ingredients that build the foundation of a good mulling spice: cloves and allspice. Together they make a base that can be enhanced with any number of sweet and aromatic additions (always in whole form) -- usually a combination of cinnamon, cardamom, orange peel and nutmeg. Take a basic recipe like this or this, and tweak it to suit your palate.

And don't worry about leftovers -- use them in homemade apple pie or pumpkin bread!
