KFC Closes Its Doors to Fight Hunger

Lunch-goers craving KFC were out of luck at one Louisville, Ky., location Tuesday, as the restaurant closed its doors to the public for two hours. But it was for a good cause.

The restaurant, located in the brand's hometown, was converted into a "World Hunger Relief Kitchen" for two hours, during which employees served Kentucky Grilled Chicken meals to about 110 residents from local shelters, KFC spokesman Rick Maynard told Slashfood. It was the first of several closings planned around the country for the 15,000-restaurant chain.

The event kicked off the company's fund- and awareness-raising activities with World Hunger Relief, including fundraisers, food drives and car washes at KFC locations around the country.

"We would like this to be as widespread geographically as possible and to generate as much interest as possible," Maynard said. "What we do is feed people. That's how we all make our living, and we want to do more to try and alleviate the problem of hunger."

Maynard declined to say where or how many restaurants would participate nationwide. While the relief kitchen events are closed to the public, the other events are open and donations can be made to World Hunger Relief online at fromhungertohope.com.

"While KFC feeds the hungry every day, closing restaurants is a bold step in helping to raise money and awareness of world hunger," KFC President Roger Eaton said.

KFC and Yum! Brands, KFC's parent company, have worked with World Hunger Relief since 2007 and have raised about $36 million for the United Nations World Food Programme and other hunger relief organizations, the company said.

They are now bracing again for two more typhoons headed its way. People are hungry as they lost their homes and belongings. The relief groups are overwhelmed and seeking help from outside due to scarcity of food supplies and drinking water that is not fit at all for human consumption.

Taco Bell recently had such a program, but I think KFC & Taco Bell are part of the same company. No matter. This type of program is wonderful for those in need to be able to enjoy a healthy meal. Hopefully other programs will feature such services.

You wouldn't be in business very long.Wendy's down from us went out of business for this very reason..I guess hired to many illiterate people. It is not the responsibility of bussinesses to educate people. When I had a job, it was my place to come to them with education ready to work. They have schools they can go to, but will most of them attend?? NO! I worked as an admissions director for trade schools for 15 years. We couldn't get many of the welfare mothers to finish the courses they started, and then thought it was terrible when they had a loan to pay back. I am in NO WAY a racist. I know many good educated black people that feel the same way. The education ( at our tax payers expense) is there for their taking, and it is up to them to take! I would love nothing more than for people to get educated, and I got a high from a little welfare mother that worked hard in her classes, and I was able to help her get a job...this is what it is all about, a hand up, not a hand out. Just think of what you are saying.

I think that is nice, but why not just take that food that is left over at the end of the night and give it to the shelter's in their communities, instead of shutting down for 2 hrs for publicity, be a silent partner and let your deed be told by the shelter's and the people who are benefitting instead of throwing it out. It seems better to do that than to take a total loss, at least someone other than rats and other undesirable four or more leggers arent eating it.

I am wondering why so people are wasting their time stereotyping people, it is not a race, ethnicity thing, you have people from every walk of life making good or bad life choice. you cannot lump everyone into those narrow categories, I agree that you are always going to have those that have good ethics and those that do not, but it runs over into every race or culture. Most of these companies want to hire foreign help because they work hard for nothing, our nothing is something to them. They also know that they do know their rights, and there are language barriers, Americans know that they are due 2 breaks and a lunch on an 8 hr shift. The thinking of a foreigner is going to be different than ours, we tell our kids to aim higher than fast food, and if you were just getting here that would seem like a luxury, when you have had to work hard for even less. I dont think that we need to dis or own, even though some people are what they are, everyone isnt like that.

*THANK YOU* for showing the number of votes cast for each choice in the poll. Other sites show only the percentage figures. Percentage only results are meaningless without the hard numbers. Thank you again.

There are many types of prejudices, race, culture, classification, etc. I think it is such a waste because you dont know what a person's potential is if you try to sum them up from where they are today, everything your naked eye sees, doesnt always tell the whole story. You never know where life may take you, so watch what you say, that welfare momma stereotype is not the bulk of those receiving assistance from the government. You really cant just put everyone in the same basket, there are those that abuse the system, but that isnt everyone that gets it. There are some that try just as hard as any to get ahead, and handle their business. You dont know who has been their and gotten out, and it is an offensive comment, some people are uneducated because they arent taking advantage of school while they are young, but that isnt everyone, and it does not that they wont wake up and get going. I think that it is a good idea for us to broaden our thoughts by getting to know people from the inside rather than from a distance, instead of assuming things about them, I agree that our young people need to work on their people skills, when working in customer positions and work ethics, it takes a special kind of person to work customer service. They should come educated about some things, but then there are some things that can be learned on the job, even some of the older need some of cs skills too. I think that we have all run into bad c service at diff times, but everyone isnt horrible like that.

Why do you think they have a poll that asks us if we are more likely to patronize a business that gives to charity? Advertising is much more expensive than giving out a hundred or so meals at a time. It's a win-win situation for KFC and Hunger Relief. I just wish they'd get my order right once in a while.
