Domino's at Center of Disgusting YouTube Video Prank Closes

A Domino's Pizza franchise in North Carolina was forced to close its doors forever last week, and its owner puts the blame on disgusting videos two former employees posted on YouTube.

"My business was off 58 percent because of YouTube," franchise owner Kevin Hendren told the Hickory Daily Record. The store closed on Sept. 22.

The franchise's troubles began when two employees of his Conover, N.C., Domino's Pizza allegedly created videos of themselves showing one putting cheese in his nose and then putting it on a sandwich, sneezing on cheese sticks and pulling down his pants, wiping himself with a sponge and then using that sponge to clean a pan. The videos were discovered in April and have been removed from YouTube.

Hendren told the newspaper he will not reopen the Domino's franchise. "I'm just living day to day right now," he told the Daily Record.

Michael Anthony Setzer, 32, of Conover, N.C., and Kristy Lynn Hammonds, 31, of Taylorsville, N.C., have been indicted on charges of distributing prohibited foods, a spokesman for the Conover Police Department told Slashfood.

The two are set to appear in Superior Court in January 2010.

"There is no hiding from the fact that this video made news all over the world because it was so brazen, and it was like watching a train wreck. People couldn't take their eyes off of it," Domino's Pizza spokesman Tim McIntyre told Slashfood. "Nationwide, we felt a hit in the week or two immediately following the explosion of it."

He said that while the video was a hoax, the company and District Attorney are treating it as a real crime. "Nobody is dumb enough to really commit a crime and then brag about it and put it on YouTube."

The company had been on track to see a profit in the second quarter of this year, McIntyre said, but saw a 0.7 percent decrease. "Because we were trending positive, all things being equal, that was the one thing we could point to and say that impacted us."

Sales nationwide have rebounded, McIntyre said. "We're much stronger than these two people in Conover, N.C."

However, the Conover Domino's Pizza franchise was unable to bounce back from the videos' impact.

"For a small business a hit of 50 percent, it's hard to recover. You've got an independent business person who lost his livelihood, and you've got 20 fellow employees who lost their jobs because these two people thought they were being funny," McIntyre said.

I have seen servers drop food on the floor pick it up and put it right on the plate they are taking out to customers. Sneeze on the plates. Seen dishes come out of the dish not washed and are used. When custormers come in just before closing, cooks and servers both have spit in or just put things in the fodd. no matter what place you eat at, you can be sure of what they have done to your food.

And I saw a similar act on an episode of "Cheaters" where an angry employee relieved himself in the office coffee pot. Let's just hope they didn't do that while they were still employed there.

These are nearly middle aged adults! They are just scumbags.>>>> The mentality of most under 50 today is that of a grade school student!

Not just at fast food but also your place of employment in the break rooms....etc... You can't trust anyone! It's GROSS!

I feel so bad for the owners, managers, and co-workers of these fools that created more job losses for this crappy economy.

I can only hope one day when they need to put food on their own tables, pay their rent and baby food -that some little idiot like themselves serves them their just desserts.

These 2 are not pranksters. They would more closely resemble homegrown terrorists. They should have to eat these pizzas in prison.>>>> I think the old way, bread and water would suffice. Moldy bread of course!

...Mr. Hendren can become an independent pizzaria.
With his experience this should be no problem. He would be offering the consumer a finer product as well. Franchise pizza is LAME.

Stop hiring kids for jobs. Most kids that work at fast food joints have greasy hair and pimples. That should turn enough of you fast food lovers off to this unhealthy crap.

I also get sick seeing toddlers being fed frenach fries and cups of soda pop. LAZY PARENTS!!! Fedd your kids good stuff.

I'm 52 and I'm not kidding, this kind of thing has always been around, but nowhere to the degree of slovenliness that it is today. The last few times I walked into a fast food joint and watched the employees behind the counter preparing food, I changed my mind and walked out. That was over 10 years ago! They are absolutely clueless in food prep now. It is as if they do not understand the concept that people are going to eat what they are preparing, or they just do not give a flying fudge, or they actually think the entire process is simply for their own entertainment and a paycheck. I cannot even think of eating in most restaurants these days. Seriously, it is far better to prepare food at home and it is cheaper and far more nutritious if you put a little effort into it. They should not even hire minors to prepare food as far as I am concerned. They just don't get it. The dumbing down of America has gone past critical. I feel sorry for that Domino's.
