"My business was off 58 percent because of YouTube," franchise owner Kevin Hendren told the Hickory Daily Record. The store closed on Sept. 22.
The franchise's troubles began when two employees of his Conover, N.C., Domino's Pizza allegedly created videos of themselves showing one putting cheese in his nose and then putting it on a sandwich, sneezing on cheese sticks and pulling down his pants, wiping himself with a sponge and then using that sponge to clean a pan. The videos were discovered in April and have been removed from YouTube.
Hendren told the newspaper he will not reopen the Domino's franchise. "I'm just living day to day right now," he told the Daily Record.
Michael Anthony Setzer, 32, of Conover, N.C., and Kristy Lynn Hammonds, 31, of Taylorsville, N.C., have been indicted on charges of distributing prohibited foods, a spokesman for the Conover Police Department told Slashfood.
The two are set to appear in Superior Court in January 2010.
"There is no hiding from the fact that this video made news all over the world because it was so brazen, and it was like watching a train wreck. People couldn't take their eyes off of it," Domino's Pizza spokesman Tim McIntyre told Slashfood. "Nationwide, we felt a hit in the week or two immediately following the explosion of it."
He said that while the video was a hoax, the company and District Attorney are treating it as a real crime. "Nobody is dumb enough to really commit a crime and then brag about it and put it on YouTube."
The company had been on track to see a profit in the second quarter of this year, McIntyre said, but saw a 0.7 percent decrease. "Because we were trending positive, all things being equal, that was the one thing we could point to and say that impacted us."
Sales nationwide have rebounded, McIntyre said. "We're much stronger than these two people in Conover, N.C."
However, the Conover Domino's Pizza franchise was unable to bounce back from the videos' impact.
"For a small business a hit of 50 percent, it's hard to recover.You've got an independent business person who lost his livelihood, and you've got 20 fellow employees who lost their jobs because these two people thought they were being funny," McIntyre said.

9-30-2009 @4:57PM halfpint7851 said... These two "adults", and I use that term very loosely, have destroyed lives! The owner and his family and the lives of their fellow co-workers. Maybe they haven't permanently destroyed them but still...I have to wonder why people r like this these days. My hope is that they do jail time, pay some sort of restitution to the owner and lost wages of their coworkers, therapy to find out why they are so immature at this age and then when they do get out of jail (min. of 5 yrs if u ask me) must do community service. People need 2 feel the consequences of their actions!

This saddens me and to think Mr. Hendren and (20) employees lost their jobs is horrific. I think that these individuals should be punished and not only spend time in juvie or jail...depending on their ages, but, also compensate not only the Hendren family but, all of the employees that lost their positions with this small business. This was obviously quite humorous to millions, especially the two individuals that had their first and last acting debut!! Sorry, to say but, this will come back ten fold to these people...maybe not next week or next year...but, they will regret their 15 minutes of fame...So, Sorry Hendren family!!

Part of their punishment should be that the owner and the other people who lost their jobs, make their food - and make them eat it, for the next ten years....just like they made it on the video. That seems a reasonable punishment. Of course, in addition to reasonable long term compensation. They are young...they should be able to work the rest of their lives to support this guy in the way he was accustomed before they ruined him.

Its not just the uneducated adults and immature teens pulling pranks,I do heating ,air-cond.and refrigeration work and have seen mold in the ductwork that blows directly down into the kitchen fryers and grilles, and the ice machines and soft serve dispensers,are the worst for mold and lack of regular cleaning and maintenance,this falls on the managers not wanting to spend the money or follow up on the inspections

9-30-2009 @5:23PM Underpaid said... This type of behavior is wrong as well all know. But, these employees are poor and don't make enough to live on. If employees don't make enough to live on, they don't care about their job and why should they?
Pay your employees well, and they in turn will be a good loyal employee. Until then, don't expect the low wage employee to care.

Supposedly this happened in April? , Dominos did not lose any money,the people who paid Dominos to lease the franchise really did not lose any money , they just tell everyone that instead of them not making 500,000 dollars , they really only made 250,000 which after costs for supplies , I am sure that they made payroll for everyone, they were pissed because chuck-E-cheese store next to them had more people and rug-ratzzz going in N out of the building .

Whether it was a Hoax or not is not the Point. There is no way that anybody after seeing these Videos can know whether or not these were things done previuosly or not. The Pathetic part is that these people have no Values except to be featured on "youtube" at any cost. They have no other goals that seem to be Important and they use the premises of somebody that was willing to give them Employment so their stint on "youtube" is more important than Loyalty. It happens more than you think including the ones where teenagers beat up others and video it just to be on "youtube". This is your Culture. Then there are the Morons who call 911 because somebody didnt get their order right or give them enougg shrimp etc. This is a glimpse of your Future.

There is obviously no excusing their behavior, but I can't help but wonder what the catalyst was for this "hoax". Seems to me, that at least in their own minds, they were horribly wronged to behave this way - there may be no excuse, but I bet there is more to this story!

They employed teenagers to wait tables and clean, I was the cook, and I saw them do some strange stuff for sure. The best was when one of the guys banged a cute waitress on the cheese in the walkin freezer one night after work during cleanup. You gotta be really hungry to eat there kiddies.
