It turns out one of Her Majesty's secret agents lived the high life only in the movies. The James Bond of the 1970s, Roger Moore, won't eat foie gras, and he won't speak to friends who do either.
"Before I knew how it was produced I would often pick at it at parties just because it was on offer -- though I never ate too much of it because of its huge calorific content," he writes Tuesday in an op-ed in the Daily Mail. "Since I have understood the cruelty attached to its production I have never touched it again. I now boycott restaurants where it is served."
"I refuse to speak to old friends who, even when they know how it is produced, are prepared to overlook the suffering for self-gratification," he writes. "My wife Christina feels just the same. No creature deserves to be treated as these birds are for our delectation."
Moore joined forces with People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals three years ago to narrate a video about foie gras production. Moore contends the birds are force-fed the human equivalent of 45 pounds of pasta a day to fatten their livers.
Foie gras has long raised eyebrows, with some cities going so far as to ban its sale.
But some chefs aren't swayed by the anti-foie gras campaigns. New York Chef David Chang of Momofuku continues to serve foie gras, and earlier this year he weighed in on Eater about why.
"I can't speak to what happens at all foie gras farms, and I have no doubt there are places that don't have the proper regard for the health of their birds, but me and my guys have been to Hudson Valley Foie Gras. We've seen every last step of the process – and we were humbled by it ... After visiting the farm, we knew that the ducks were being raised in a responsible, respectful manner and that we could serve foie gras in our restaurants with a clean conscience," he wrote.
What do you think? Should James Bond be defending the waterfowl? Let us know in the comments below.

9-22-2009 @3:12PM me not you said... I have been leading the same boycot in my life for years. Bravo Good Sir!! I wish more of Hollywood would do what is right, not just what is self gratifying. Maybe they would then earn the role model status they all seem to crave.

So basically you are eating pain, torture, and death. I don't talk to anyone who eats that either cause it's so brutally gross. It's what I think people like serial killers eat that, and people who are completely selfish or evil. Oh, I went to Culinary Institute of America, and I love to create amazing food. I have many awards for excellence but I would never serve froie gras.

Those ducks and/or geese typically live far better lives than their chickenhouse raised cram packed cousins, usually being free-range until the last two weeks when the feeding occurs. Ducks have no gag reflex, though.
Usually a premium provider of foie gras (is there any other kind) will have very well treated fowl.
It is remarkable how many social crusaders jump all over the foie gras bandwagon because ducks are cute, while turning a blind eye to the misery under which most other farm animals live. Life is not pretty, nature is not pretty, and the harvesting of meat is not pretty. Is that going to stop me from relishing it? Not at all. As a matter of fact, I think I'll go have some foie gras at lunch today.

Statements like this really bug me. I'll give him the benefit of the doubt and assume that this is a fact. But, 45 pounds, compared to what? Some animals are able to consume their body weight in food. How much do ducks and geese normally eat?
According to the foie gras article on Wikipedia...
"A wild duck may double its weight in the autumn, storing fat throughout much of its body and especially on the liver, in preparation for winter migration."
So... I guess this would be like a human gaining 200 pounds in a few months.

It is amazing how we can find it necessary to ensure the humane treatment of a bird but ignore the total devastation of human babies that have their brains sucked out of their skull and endure horrific treatment that YES, they do FEEL. A baby is far more important than a bird. I agree that cruel treatment of these and other animals is inexcusable, but we most certainly have even more of an obligation to ensure that every baby conceived has the right to LIVE as well. It's a mixed up country when people boycott fowl but stand up for fowl practices.

The miserable treatment meted out to cattle, sheep, pigs and poultry in order to satisfy human demand would turn many people away from meat products if they were aware of animal suffering. Calves provide veal and small pig ribs are a delicacy for some. Roger Moore is positioned to expose some of these practices; well done, Mr. Moore, keep it up.

So, before we condemn all product find out its origin. As for Mr. Moore not talking to old friends, this shows a complete lack of tolerance for any differing view from his own. Very scarey and very self important.
