The commander-in-chief -- who made his sixth appearance on the talk show (his first as President) to discuss Afghanistan, the economy, unemployment and health care -- was upstaged by a heart-shaped potato, brought to the show's taping by Mary Apple of Independence, Mo.
"The main reason I'm here?" the President said. "I want to see that heart-shaped potato."
Apple was happy to oblige the President. She gave him her precious tater -- whose variety is uncertain -- and let him keep it, according to the Associated Press.
"Mary Apple? Is your name really Mary Apple?" President Obama asked. "And you carry heart-shaped potatoes around?"
"This is remarkable," the President said. The potato even made its way into the Monday Top Ten list.
"I was very excited," Apple told CBS' "The Early Show."
Letterman was able to turn it into a punchline: "Remember when things get tough going forward, as they will, you sir, are in possession of a heart-shaped potato."
We'd like to know what the President's plans for the potato are: Will he have it vetted by the Secret Service? Will he bring it back to the White House for the girls? Is the tuber worthy of a place in the first family's next meal?
Apple's wish? "I'm hoping that it earns its way into the Smithsonian," she said Tuesday.
