What's On Tap, Rhode Island - Doherty's East Avenue

A weekly look at the draft selection in beer-friendly bars across the country.

When is an Irish pub not your typical Irish pub? Well, when the bar has 48 taps featuring some of the best craft beers America has to offer, it certainly sets itself apart.

For the past three years, Doherty's East Avenue in Pawtucket, R.I., has continued to look the part, but don't be fooled by the facade. "When we bought the place, it had a very Irish theme. The building's been here for 60 years," says owner Jack Doherty.

It also had only 12 taps, which was quickly expanded to 48 to accommodate the owner's love of craft beer.

So why keep the Irish angle? "To have a great time on St. Patrick's Day," Doherty happily responds.

Still, making the change to coveting craft has served the East Ave pub well. "We go through about 25 kegs a week," Doherty continues. "Our sales have gone up significantly over the time we've been here."

Doherty attributes that success to providing a great selection. "We are known as one of the best beer bars in the area," he says. "We carry two to three different beers of every style. We always have at least six IPAs on draft."

Focusing on seasonal selections is the other trick up his sleeve. "We have tons of Octoberfests right now, and pumpkin beers," he told us. "Come the end of October, we move into stouts and porters and winter brewers." In fact, 20 taps are dedicated to rotating seasonals.

Despite having only one brewery in the state, Newport Storm brewery gets huge support from the bar. "I believe craft beer starts locally," says Doherty. "We're the only bar in the state that sells everything Newport Storm makes."

With an attitude like that, Doherty's East Avenue will probably be a local staple itself for years to come.

Tip of the Day

December may have peppermint bark, but have you thought to incorporate the taste of autumn into white chocolate with a rich pumpkin swirl?
