This December, Chock full o'Nuts will open its first full-service restaurant since the chain shuttered its last restaurant in 1990, company officials tell Crain's New York Business.
The 2,800-square-foot restaurant will open less than a block from the Flatiron Building in Manhattan and serve up old favorites from its last bout decades ago in the restaurant arena, Crain's said.
The coffee chain already operates about 100 small cafes on the East Coast, but this restaurant on 23rd Street between Fifth and Sixth Avenues will be its first full-service restaurant since it shuttered Chock full o'Nuts eateries in New York in the '80s and early '90s.
"This was the original fast food, if you think about it," one Chock diner told Knight-Ridder in 1990.
Anthony Rinaldi, the executive chef at the Pearl Room in Brooklyn, N.Y., is designing the menu, set to include whole-wheat doughnuts and "nutted cheese" sandwiches (cream cheese and chopped nuts on raisin bread), Crain's said.
Chock full o'Nuts was founded by nut salesman William Black in 1926.

Chock full o' Nuts Restaurant opening - I am looking forward to the new Chock full o' Nuts restaurant - when I worked in NYC I would buy my lunch there regularly. I especially loved the cream cheese & nuts on raisin bread sandwiches and the whole wheat donuts. In fact, my husband & I regularly traveled to NYC in the evening to visit the Donnell Library on 53rd & 5th & always stopped to pick up a dozen whole wheat donuts to take home. I have tried to find - & have actually called numerous kiosk owners who advertise they sell the original whole wheat donuts, but when asked - their answer is always NO. I am eager for their return.
