SUSTA is the latest sugar substitute to hit store shelves with what developers call a proprietary blend of "inulin fiber, fructose, natural flavors, botanical extracts, vitamins, minerals and probiotics." At 5 calories, SUSTA claims its sweet punch from orange-peel extract.
But its inspiration came the Newton way -- with an apple.
Michael McCarthy, CEO of NXT Nutritionals, tells Slashfood the humble apple's natural sweetness, fiber and nutrients inspired SUSTA's creation.
"I always wondered why we can't make a sweetener that's both low-calorie and has added health benefits," McCarthy said.
Beverage-friendly packets are already hitting the stores, and the company plans a baking-product sweetener within the next three months.
"Each packet is as sweet as two teaspoons of sugar [and] contains one gram of fiber, vitamin C and probiotics," McCarthy said.
Currently, SUSTA is sold in about 2,000 grocery stores. Officials hope 10,000 stores will carry the product by spring 2010.

It's benefits, so it claims, are to sweeten your food as close to a natural sweetener as possible, with little to no side effect. Most of the sweeteners out there are not good for your health. Right now we don't know too much about this product to even give an honest opinion of it.

9-17-2010 @9:10AM Sarah said... I have used this product for a couple of years now...I also wish the soda companies would put a "healthy" sugar sweetener in their product. If you know anything about "SUSTA", short for sustained energy (as I found out on their web site) it does not produce any yeast so if you suffer from CFS or Fibromyalgia this is an extremely safe product to use...I wish people would read up about a product before trash talking something they don't know anything about. I studied this product, talked to my doctor and think this is the best tasting "all natural" healthy sugar substitute around. Truvia and Stevia taste AWFUL!! The after taste is horrible, and you can't use it to cook with.

EGGS ETC..AND NO SUGAR ....i have since lost 25 1/2 pounds without even counting calories.....i have brought down my cholesterol levels, trigliceride levels, and my diabetis is better,,,,my A1C is 6.5.....i have eliminated 4 of my daily pills...and the dr.said i would eventually get off all them on this diet....i thought this diet would be tough to follow but i am actually enjoying it and it is healhy.......

It's now being sold in "individual" packets (finally) but SUSTA has been in 3 other products and I personally have used it and like the benefits of it. You should realize that our country has been artificially poisoned over the past several years with all the artificial and chemically altered products. Finally we have a all natural, with vitamins and health benefits. Read up America!!!
