'Silver Palate' Author Sheila Lukins Dies at 66

Sheila Lukins, the author of the iconic 1980s cookbook "Silver Palate Cookbook" has died after a short battle with brain cancer.

Lukins wrote the cookbook in the early 1980s after running a shop called the Silver Palate on New York's Upper West Side with colleague Julee Rosso. Its recipes -- including olive-infused chicken Marbella -- became mainstays of the '80s kitchen.

Lukins had been diagnosed with brain cancer only three months ago, her daughter told the New York Times.

Workman Publishing, the publisher of "The Silver Palate," expressed the company's sadness on its Twitter page Monday morning. "We lost dear friend and culinary pioneer Sheila Lukins."

Lukins opened the Silver Palate shop with Russo after running a catering company called "The Other Woman" from her apartment.

"The Silver Palate" sold more than 2.5 million copies since its debut in 1982. Lukins had spent the last 23 years working as a food columnist for Parade magazine writing the column "Simply Delicious."

"The whole idea is to make people feel very comfortable preparing a meal," Lukins once said, according to Parade. "The best compliment I ever get is that cooking from these recipes is just like having a friend helping you in the kitchen."

I got this book early in my marriage and have fond memories of the recipes we tried and the company we entertained. Even today the cover of the book makes me smile.

I first made this dish for my husband (then boyfriend) twenty years ago and now am making for the two of us PLUS our children. Red Snapper, whipping cream, saffron, tomato paste...... and a delicious bottle of wine....worth every calorie. My favorite recipe of all.

I admit I've never heard of her...hopefully she lived a very happy, full life. My comment was if dying your hair can sometimes cause brain cancer? I remember reading that Jackie Kennedy, who famously dyed her hair for many years, and died of hodgkins (sp) lymphoma is linked to certain hair dyes. Is this a myth?

It is my all time favorite with great menus as well as recipes. The Nutted Wild Rice on page 345 has been a family requirement at holiday meals for decades. I've had so many requests for the recipe that it's on file in my computer now. Bless her! What a great American cook.

Silver Palate New Basics
Cookbook was the Joy of Cooking for the younger generation. I have to agree. I
absolutely love it. Their chili for a crowd
(from one of their earlier cookbooks) is
a great recipe as is their eggplant parmesan which
has no breading and therefore less calories yet
great flavor.

The prawns with basil, wrapped in prosciutto are my absolute favorite, and have appeared at most of my parties. My thoughts are with her family and friends. Rest in peace Sheila.

Have Silver Palate (it cost $9.95!), SP Good Times and New Basics (2 copies, paperback & hardcover). Top notch books that have stood the test of time. I loved Silver Palate so much I gave copies to everyone when it came out. Sheila Lukins enriched my life. I am sad to read of her death.
