Burger Diet Makes You Dumb?

Can a daily dose of chopped beef really make you stupid?

That's what one Chicago food writer claims, after eating burgers for 65 days straight for Chicago Magazine. "The onslaught of red meat did what drugs and alcohol and fatherhood could not: It made me stupid," Jeff Ruby writes in a humorous piece entitled "Burgers Made Me Dumb."

Ruby chalks up the bouts of stupidity with "a mild case of cognitive dysfunction syndrome. CDS (aka brain fog)."

But can a burger really lower your IQ?

Studies have found that too much red meat could lead to blindness, lower sperm count and boost your risk of cancer.

But smarts? Well, Meat & Livestock Australia launched a controversial campaign last year with actor Sam Neill, who says red meat consumption actually made our brains grow.

As for Ruby, he says his brain fog is finally clearing. "These days, I celebrate small victories, like the fact that I can once again carry my kid in from the car without getting winded," he writes. "Trouble is, I keep taking him to the wrong apartment."

What do you think? Can burger consumption make you stupid? Let us know in the comments below!

Does red meat consumption affect your smarts?
Yes.453 (16.0%)
Not sure.498 (17.6%)
No way! Pass me a burger.1885 (66.5%)

I'm pretty sure I could create a diet based on any food that would lower my IQ due to excess.

I WOULD SAY EATING RED MEAT WITH ITS ACCOMPANYING FAT CONTENT WILL MAKE A PERSON FATTER OR MORE OVERWEIGHT THAN THEEY SHOULD OR COULD BE THAN SAY THE NEWLY DEFINED, FLEXITARIAN DIET.

Take Bologna that you make sandwiches out of,and you can bet your bippy that the packing house doesn't throw away any guts from cattle or hogs, and that includes the a$$ chute.

What is stupid is to believe that this single anecdotal experience, lacking all scientific controls such as random sampling, control group, double blind, etc., leads to any kind of conclusion whatsoever. The guy wasted (waisted?!) his time if he was seeking verifiable truth.
