Sweetening Sauces with Carrots -- Tip of the Day

Ever wonder why carrots pop up in sauce recipes?

While carrots are a great way to add a whole slew of nutrients and amp up the texture of a sauce, there's another reason they pop up all the time: sweetness.

Adding the orange veggie to a mix is a way to increase the taste without adding sugar. In fact, it also acts as a vanquisher of sharpness, slipped into many marinara recipes -- like Giada De Laurentiis' version and the famous Babbo sauce -- to successfully cut a tomato's sharp acidity.

Sweet, cheap, handy and super-nutritious -- what could be better?
