An environmental group called the Outdoor Circle says the Wienermobile's visit violated a state ban on vehicular advertising, according to reports.
Bob Loy, the group's spokesman, told the Honolulu Advertiser that Outdoor Circle received about a dozen complaints from residents of Oahu about the 27-foot-long vehicle's visit.
"The Wienermobile is cute. It's got an attractive quality to it. I think anyone would agree with that, and that is part of the insidious nature of advertising," Loy told the paper. "It appears to be one thing, when in fact it's another."
Oscar Mayer isn't having it.
"To our knowledge we did not violate any laws, and we work with local authorities to secure permits when they are necessary," Syd Lindner, a spokeswoman for Oscar Mayer told Slashfood on Friday.
Oscar Mayer first introduced the Wienermobile in 1936. The company currently has seven Wienermobiles, including a "mini" built on a Cooper-S chassis, driven by "hotdoggers" who blog about their exploits.
"We have the vehicles crisscrossing the country," Lindner said. "They hand out Wiener Whistles, and they attend charity events and festivals and things throughout the country."
The last time the Wienermobile hit the Aloha State was about five years ago, she said. It takes about nine days for the Wienermobile to travel by boat from Hawaii back to the mainland.
There are no plans for the vehicle to vacation again in Hawaii anytime soon.

They complain and gripe about the military being there, they complain about EVERYTHING that involves "the mainland" as they refer to it. YET...they certainly do NOT mind being the 50th state when they are being delt out BILLIONS in Federal MONEY! They certainly LOVED it when their national guard husbands obtained the government cards giving them access to the base and the commissary/PX/BX privilages. They FLOODED in the doors and cleared the meat counters and the shelves. They fleece the military members by insisting on quarantine of our pets, charging OUTRAGEOUS fees. They mistreat the animals that are in the quarantine by taunting them and spraying them in the faces with high powered hoses. The quarantine facility is INFESTED WITH fleas and ticks. For our first 120 days on the island we spent it sitting in the humid 100 plus degree heat in a CAGE with our dog. Many of the pets die there with NO explanation given. They fleece military members who are looking for housing by charging 5 times what they would charge a "local" for an apartment fresh out of the 70's that is the size of a shoe box. Tourists pay 5 times the money for souvenirs if they appear "white". Our children were treated horribly in the public schools and were refered to as haolies by the TEACHERS and local kids! And now....they are whining over the weiner mobile? They certainly didn't complain when American troops saved the islands during WWII. Yet now they make it clear they do NOT want the military "on THEIR islands"...again it's part of America when the big bucks are being sent over. They love tourists but ONLY if they stay on the beaches, spending the big money. Loved the beauty of the islands but we were all treated badly while stationed there. Bring the weiner mobile back to the "mainland" and stop sending Hawaii hot dogs or spam. Without spam they would go nuts.
The Hawaiian islands are beautiful but the truth is were it NOT for the "mainland", tourism, and federal funds...they would all be living in shacks and hunting in the forests for wild boar!

I think what a lot of people are forgetting in this comments section is that it was a SMALL group of people (the article says "about a dozen") out of the whole state of Hawaii that was complaining.
I mean, really, you're going to hate on an entire state because of a dozen silly people?

Okay, Mr. Loy, I'll bite: what is the one thing it appears to be that it's not? It appears to me to be a 27-foot long advertisement for Oscar Mayer hot dogs. What are you seeing that's convincing you they're trying to be subtle about it?
