Denny's Sued Over Salt Content in Food

Denny's menu features items that "are dangerously high in sodium," according to the class action lawsuit filed by a New Jersey man with the support of the Center for Science in the Public Interest, a nutrition and food safety nonprofit group.

Nick DeBenedetto, of Tinton Falls, N.J., a 48-year-old on medication for high-blood pressure, filed the suit Thursday in the New Jersey Superior Court in Middlesex County.

"Denny's menu deceptively presents various items as single meals to be consumed by one individual without disclosing that they contain substantially more sodium (in some cases two or three times more) than the maximum recommended amount for all meals consumed by an individual during a given day," his complaint states.

Denny's Corporation, based out of Spartanburg, S.C., told the Los Angeles Times the suit is "frivolous and without merit."

One of the high-salt items listed in the suit is the "Meat Lover's Scramble" -- two eggs scrambled with bacon, diced ham, crumbled sausage and topped with Cheddar cheese, served alongside two bacon strips, two sausage links, hash browns and two buttermilk pancakes.

Doctors recommend against eating more than 2,300 milligrams of sodium a day. The Meat Lover's Scramble has 5,690 milligrams of sodium -- nearly three times the amount of salt advised in one day, the complaint states.

Sodium is associated with high blood pressure, and with high blood pressure comes the risk of heart disease and stroke.

"It is unconscionable that a single meal would have 2,000 milligrams or more of sodium," Dr. David Katz, a preventive medicine specialist at Yale University Medical School told the paper.

Denny's has approximately 1,500 restaurants worldwide.

Although high salt consumption is a problem, health experts are urging that sodium is just one risk factor and the high number of calories and fat people consume daily should not be disregarded. Tell Slashfood what you think: Is sodium content something that should be regulated?

He KNEW he had high blood pressure and was on medication, but from my judgment, he simply took advantage by suing Denny's for money. Wake up, America, people DON'T CARE. Lawyers don't care, either. They are happy fat cats!!

People are ludacris...dont want salt...stop being lazy and cook the food yourself and leave out the salt. Meat purchased anywhere will have salt in it...salt preserves meats and cheese as well as many other foods. People have no one to blame but themselves on the foods they eat. Salt is a problem yes, but not everyone has problems with it and sueing places over their menu items is stupid. Dont like thats theres too much salt, not enough, whatever...dont eat there, simple as that!

Don't think it's healthy or safe stay the hell away from it. There is no one to take care of you. Government is not for babies like these people. You have a choice, and when you make that choice you reap the results. No pansy ass can say that he doesn't know that a meat extravaganza like this isn't loaded with salt. get real and get rid of all lawyers!

As a general rule of thumb, restaurant foods tend to be richer and have a higher sodium content than foods made at home where you have control.
I cooked at Denny's years ago and everything is made to order. I feel sure that they would have accomodated his dietary needs had he asked.
I think he knew exactly what he was doing and why he was doing it and that he could get a lawyer to take his ridiculous case.

It isn't that the man should be suing Denny's, but Denny's should be suing him. I agree with the one who stated that about the lawyers, why would a lawyer take such a case? Makes no sense. NO ONE forced that man to go in there and eat and I love Denny's and there is plenty of low sodium food there and everywhere else. If he's to lazy to cook it himself, he ought not complain of the way someone else does it, especially if he's gonna eat. Wake up Dude. Come on..........for the one who commented on people sittin at computers etc, all I can say is, if you chose to eat something then it is up to you to decide what it is and how it affect your health. It has nothing to do with what line of work someone is in. I guess we all need to start suing every food chain around b/c chocolate ain't good for us and look at the massive amounts of chocolate that are in some items sold. This is just stupid.............

Actually, you have more to worry about than just the sodium- the nitrites/nitrates and benzypyrene in the cured meats, the cholesterol, the PCBs in the eggs, the high fructose corn syrup in the pancakes and syrup, etc, etc, but oh so yummy!

Call me crazy but if by the time you reach the age of 48 years old you aren't aware that foods like bacon, ham & sausage aren't loaded with sodium you shouldn't be suing resturants you should crawl out from under the rock you've been under for those 48 years! Even if you can't read the decades worth of articles printed in any number of published works you should've heard the millions of reports that have aired on the radio & tv over those same few decades. This guy has clearly jumped on the frivilous lawsiut train so many have seemed to be riding these days. The sad thing is he'll probably make a mint cause Denny's will want to settle & sweep this under the rug as quickly as possible.

He did graduate, didn't he? How could anyone legitimately claim to not know what goes into their food in any restaurant chain like Denny's. This guy's just hoping to grab a quick chunk of change from Denny's. Probably hoping they'll settle before it gets to court.
