Starbucks really wants you to try their new line of pastries.

On Tuesday, July 21, the chain will give patrons a free pastry until 10:30 a.m. with the purchase of a beverage. Items included in the promotion are muffins, scones, bagels, croissants, rolls, bread, pound cake, morning buns, coffeecake, cheese danish, apple fritters, doughnuts, tarts, pies, gluten-free orange Valencia cakes or tropical paradise bars.

The promotion is for the chain's new formulation of pastries that are trans-fat free and made without artificial dyes, sweeteners and high-fructose corn syrup. Coffee lovers will have to print out the coupon or show it to the barista on their hand-held device.

In fact, market research often find that when an individual is exposed to a perceived 'healthier' option, they are likely to drink or eat more calories. High fructose corn syrup, which is made from corn, is no different from other common sugars such as honey and sucrose (table sugar) with regards to calories and even has a similar chemical make up with glucose and fructose. Research has proven that there is a not a single ingredient to blame for the plethora of health issues Americans face today. The real issue it at hand is the simple equation of calories coming in versus calories going out.

Healthy regards,

Kim Mueller, MS, RD
