Burger King Apologizes for Ad Showing Hindu Goddess

For the second time this year, Burger King has apologized for a sandwich ad. The burger chain has pulled an ad showing the Hindu goddess Lakshmi's image over a sandwich after complaints that it implied the deity ate beef; Hindus believe the cow is sacred.

The Hindu American Foundation, via its website, called for an immediate cease to the campaign calling it, "highly disrespectful and offensive to Hindus worldwide."

The ad, which ran only in Spain, showed Lakshmi over a trio of foods (including a doughnut) with the phrase "la merienda es sagrada" -- the snack is sacred, the Telegraph reports.

"We are apologizing because it wasn't our intent to offend anyone," spokeswoman Denise T. Wilson said to the Telegraph. "Burger King Corporation values and respects all of its guests as well as the communities we serve. This in-store advertisement was running to support only local promotion for three restaurants in Spain and was not intended to offend anyone -- out of respect for the Hindu community, the limited-time advertisement has been removed from the restaurants."

In April, a Burger King ad for the "Texican" burger that showing a small wrestler with a Mexican-flag-like cape angered Mexican officials, prompting the chain to apologize.

Unfortuately, the only message they care about or understand is the almighty $$.00. The King has crossed the line of good taste and must go. I will join the Boycott. The King must go! PS I really do love the burgers!!!

Hey maybe they could have Chairman Mao endorse their burgers and piss off the Chinese....
I am sick of everyone constantly whining. Get a life and stop complaining about petty stuff.

So what if the bitch eats, or doesn't eat, cow. The rest of us do. Tell India to "SHUT IT! You don't like it, don't eat there. We serve beef. You wouldn't be interested anyway."

Personally, I think they should try to see the humor in it. Hell, I'm part Native American, and I'd laugh my @$$ off if they tried to market a pemmican burger! Then again, I've been told I'm a bit sick...

They're reaching for anyone. I especially hate the "Flying Pig Man" with the ribs commercial. There is nothing about that ad that makes me want to rush right out and buy it. BK needs to fire their ad agency, get out there & do some outside in marketing.

Besides, I live accross the street from various fast-food restaraunts, with Wendy's, McDonalds, and Burger King all in the same area. McDonalds is the first one closest to my residence, then Wendy's, and last, Burger King. So it only makes sense that I'd go to the closest one. I haven't eaten at Burger King in an 6 years. I'd much rather spend my LAST dollar at McDonalds then save up for Burger King.

Nobody ever apologizes when Christianity is attacked and/or in an unfavorable advertisement - its always for Muslims, Hindu's, Taoist, Budda, et al - everything has to be so political correct nowadays! We can't even laugh at ourselves anymore. Life was much better in the 40s/50s/early 60s!

Instead, they seem only bent on trying to win some kind of award or something (which will never happen) and they are driving customers away. I agree with Citizen who said the "Square Butts" ad stunk. It did. I don't go to BK anymore. Their ads don't say anything about how good their burgers are; they just seem hell-bent on offending everyone.
