Recording Family Recipes - Tip of the Day

Ever tried to record a family recipe and get lost in a sea of handfuls and pinches? A scale can make all the difference.

Many seasoned cooks don't create dishes from carefully measured ingredients. They create them by eye and feel -- a pinch here, a splash there. Because of this, trying to write down that beloved family recipe can be a real pain.

The solution: Get out a scale and measure the ingredients as your loved one throws them in. That way, you'll know the precise amounts, rather than guessing after the fact and never quite capturing the food's memorable flavor. Either zero the scale after every addition, or slowly note the increase in weight.

This tip came thanks to Kyla Eaglesham at Madeleines in Toronto.
