William & Mary Asparagus Mascot?

Go spears, go! That could be a new chant for College of William & Mary students, if administrators approve an asparagus stalk as the school's next mascot.

Known collectively as the Tribe, the sports teams of the Williamsburg, Va., school have been without furry representation since a 2006 NCAA ruling eliminated its feathered Native American logo, the Associated Press reports. Since April, the school has solicited suggestions for a new mascot. Submissions close on June 30.

Of course, the school wouldn't be the first to adopt a food as its mascot ... ever notice how these anthropomorphized eats always seem to be on the offensive?

Delta State University in Cleveland, Miss., boasts the Fighting Okra, the University of North Carolina School of the Arts has a Fighting Pickle and who can forget Scottsdale Community College's Artie the Fighting Artichoke?

An asparagus supporter says if the mascot is paired with cheese, it will represent the school colors -- green and gold.

The stalks still have an uphill battle. Other suggestions include a feathered horse, Fightin' Fiddler Crabs and "Maizey Maize," an ear of corn with red lips and long eyelashes.

What other edible mascots have you seen?

Why must they demean the strong, vibrant, heroic asparagus plant by associating it with a team of strong, vibrant, healthy, coordinated, victorious, proud, athletes? Why do they show their hate for this great plant by attaching it to the great heritage of a team of people striving to be the best at what they do, both on the field of play and in the halls of education? What an insult! - By the way: if the team wins, will they drench the coach with a bucketful of hollandaise sauce?
