Gordon Ramsay Apologizes for Sexist Rant After Phone Call From Mom

gordon ramsay

Humble pie is something chef Gordon Ramsay says "I'll be eating for breakfast for the rest of my life" after the "Hell's Kitchen" host apologized for a sexist rant at the Melbourne Good Food and Wine Show that led to a very public spat with a journalist.

Ramsay apologized Wednesday for comparing Australian TV newscaster Tracy Grimshaw to a pig. He said he knew he'd gone too far when his mother phoned him in a huff.

"When your mum rings you, and it's a bollocking down the telephone, then of course you start to get the picture," he told Grimshaw's program "A Current Affair."

YouTube video of the incident Saturday at the food show shows Ramsay telling the crowd: "Look who I sat next to on the plane at Qantas," as an image of a naked pig woman on all fours and a photo of Miss Piggy are shown. "There she is, oh Jesus, I'm not going to tell you her name but it begins with T." He then says, "It's a joke."

The insult came a day after Grimshaw sat down with the hot-head chef in an interview that began with him asking "What turns you on?" and ended with an insult to a mole on her face.

The food show comments sparked a worldwide outcry against Ramsay, including a jib by Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd who called the chef "a new form of lowlife."

Ramsay insisted Wednesday that he never called Grimshaw a lesbian and said the pig images shown to a crowd of 3,000 in Melbourne were meant as a swine flu joke. "I felt ill when I first arrived here," he said.

"I've said some very flippant things in my time, and I call it as I see it," he said. "So having a pratting-around joke from a man's point of view about a renowned professional journalist and calling her a pig is not clever."

Ramsay said subsequent disparaging comments about the newscaster came because she refused to take his phone call on Saturday.

"I'm like a school child -- someone shows me attention and it's funny -- that's what I am," he said. "I made a big mistake. I've gone too far. If any of you guys had called my wife a pig and it was in front of me, I'd punch your lights out. And I am deeply, deeply sorry for the hurt that's been caused, and I accept full responsibility and I want to put it to bed."

Grimshaw accepted the apology.

"I believe it's taken a lot for a bloke with Gordon's sort of personality to turn around from all that he's said in the past four days and offer what he has today, and I appreciate it," she said.

I have lost respect for him and probably won't give him a mind anymore. You can't support this type of behavior by rewarding it, or everyone will think that is the correct way to behave. The media will probably wait to see how the polls go, and if he gets kudos, look out, he may have created a whole new genre of TV bad boy behavoir! I for one will not pay it any mind.

I think he is a great chief, but to let him do the things he does and the way he talks to the people on his show really just gets out of hand, #1 his language and his disrespect to these people who are trying to make their dreams come true. I mean come on the aspect of what he is doing is good, but the way he does it is just horrible! The way he embarrasses these people on this show is wrong and I know people will be hard on you when you are learning but this is abuse! As Hells kitchen went on I could not watch the abuse anymore! Reminded me of Jerry Springer! I just pity anyone who is that desperate to withstand the insults and name calling and abuse from Ramsey. Good luck and my blessings to anyone brave enough to tolerate that show.

That's really what his T.V. show "Hell's Kitchen" is all about. People tune in to see his temper tantrums, not what dish is being served. Personally, I think the show is scripted and the Directors and Producers want him to behave this way. You know, anything for ratings.

The only reason this was made an issue was because she was apparently a renowned reporter... (I've never heard of her). He calls people fat cows all the time.. and This is what got headlines??

Plain and simple. He's an entertainer.. and a damn good one at that.

I like the concept of the show and watched it the first season...It just became one bleep after another and his less than human treatment of the aspiring chefs is too painfull to watch... He could do the same thing and accomplish the same thing without all of the foul language and abuse
I don't see how anybody finds this entertaining

He really gets into the faces of some of the people he's helping, because most are losers and need a good kick in the ass. I wish the show wasn't censored because the constant bleep sounds are very irritating. I love the show and will keep on watching.

If he's such a "straight forward" kinda guy - then say it to her face, not millions of viewers. He's a no class clod that should not be on television and people should not be condoning his actions.

I like the fact that he is straight forward with the so-called 'chefs' (and I use the term loosely for most of them) on "Kitchen Nightmares". These people need a good swift kick in the butt. However, name calling and using the 'f' word every time you turn around simply shows that you don't have the skills of the English lanquage to accurately get your point across...that or simply...Chef Ramsey simply doesn't give a damn. (Ooops...my bad).
Most of the young people on "Hell's Kitchen" deserve the respect that they have earned in trying to become a decent chef. There are those, however...like Lacy from last season that should never have been on the show in the first place. Good grief! Her performance (or lack, there-of, I should say) in the kitchen was atrocious. Never have I seen anyone so lazy and non-complacent as this girl was last season. I could see where someone like her might raise the shackles on Gordon Ramsey.
Anyhow, Gordon...I, for one love you and your shows. Just try to tone it down a bit...OK? Give respect where respect is due and throw that 'f' word out where it belongs...in the garbage. You've got the talent...why mar it with the foul lanquage you use? Enough said...

If he cares what his mom thinks, she needs to have a long talk with him about his lack of respect for anyone. Do the world a favor, don't watch. I only tried to watch once. Our world is in a bad way. His type of behavior is a bad example for everyone. It's people like him who contribute to our ill-tempered populations worst behaviors. Look at some of the most popular programs: Bridezillas, etc. People behaving badly. I really believe that most people are good, but shows like his and some others do not bring out that good in a person. I don't believe in censorship, but again, just don't watch.

He should be mature enough to handle the situation w/o throwing a tantrum. The man only makes it seem the gossip must be true.

Btw, I love how he flips if a dish isn't ready asap, UNLESS it's made by one of the many females he's blatantly flirting with, then it's...'It's not about how fast it's prepared'...

He's so transparent.

Ramsay went off like a mad man at this poor shlub. It was then I lost any respect I might have had for him. He is an arrogant, ignorant bully. It would be fun to see one the targets of his vitriol wheel around, and drop Ramsay like a bad habit. That would make for "Good TV"
