Kitchen Food Safety - 'Dirty Little Secrets'
by Sara Bonisteel, Posted Jun 9th 2009 @ 11:00AM
Every once in a while it's good to have a refresher course in kitchen safety. The FDA's 1996 flick "Dirty Little Secrets" does just that with a dramatic announcer, toilet paper in the fridge and a copy of "The Silver Palate Cookbook." Did they miss anything? Weigh in.

The family is completely ridiculous. I think that the assumption that all microbes are harmful does an injustice as well. Most are not harmful and many are beneficial but still everyone walks around with antibacterial sanitizers. Living in a bubble is not healthy. They do make the point that hot soapy water is all you need for proper cleaning so kudos there. Lastly I have a treehugger point to make. They show the mother pushing about 2lb of vegetable scrap down the garbage disposal. Composting those scraps makes rich organic soil to grow more veggies in and helps keep overly nutrient rich waste out of the treatment plant. Too many nutrients in waste water causes lots of problems and we're all downstream.

Overall, I think I'm doing well according to this guide. However, mom should have washed her hands immediately after touching the dog. She touched raw carrots and everything else after touching the dog.
