Mint Substitutions - Tip of the Day

There's nothing quite like the crisp flavor of fresh mint, but in a pinch, there are substitutions.

mint

A few sprigs of mint can be magic in everything from mojitos and pesto to salads and glazes. While there's nothing that truly compares to the real thing, there are substitutions that can be made when the leaves are out of reach.

As the "The Food Substitutions Bible" explains, 1 tablespoon chopped fresh mint can be replaced with:
  • 1 teaspoon dried mint
  • 1 teaspoon mint from a herbal mint tea bag
  • 1/4 - 1/2 teaspoon mint extract
  • 1 drop oil of peppermint
  • 1-3 tablespoons creme de menthe (you might have to decrease liquid in recipe by the same amount)
  • 3-4 tablespoons peppermint schnapps (same reduction of liquid might be necessary)
  • 1 tablespoon chopped fresh parsley
  • 1 tablespoon chopped fresh basil
And these subs don't work only for food recipes. Did you know you can make a mojito with basil?
