Reusing Plastic Bags - Tip of the Day

Many of us remember to reuse plastic grocery bags, but here are some tricks for getting the most out of those vegetable and bread bags.

plastic bags and fruitsSo many of us reuse plastic supermarket bags that companies started manufacturing bag storage solutions. Those aren't the only plastics we should be reusing, however. Every produce aisle is full of plastic bag dispensers that allow us to separate foods and keep them fresh but we often just rip open bags at home and toss them afterwards.

Instead, try saving them. These sturdy little plastic bags help veggies stay fresh longer, prevent bread from getting too hard too quickly and best of all, let us make the most of a local farmers' market. Grab some saved bags and toss the fresh-from-the-farm veggies right inside and into a canvas bag keeping those dirty potatoes from making a muddy mess next to your lettuce and earning you many looks of appreciation from the farmers who buy these for their many customers.

When using bags that have contained bread or dry goods, just shake them before storing them. If the bag got a bit wet inside, clean it with a little soap and water and dry it somewhere out of the way -- and give yourself a pat on the back for taking recycling one step further.
