Out of all the fast food restaurants, Carl's Jr. probably changes -- or at least augments -- its menu the most often. There's always some newish, vaguely titillating, really-bad-for-you item advertised with a giant banner outside. On this go round through the drive-in, the wind-fluttered photos were pushing the Mint Oreo Shake, Farmer John's Jumbo Chili Dog, Carl's Catch Fish Sandwich, Crisp Burritos and the Kentucky Bourbon Burger.
While we could have made this a multipart series entitled "Lissa Becomes Quite Hefty Indeed," I decided to restrict myself to the latter two choices, the burritos and the bourbon burger. So, the burritos. Really, they were rather like egg rolls filled with taco meat. Which is not necessarily a bad thing (definitely the kind of food people crave at about 2 a.m. after drinking a lot of beer), but it could have been flashed up a little bit. There's also apparently cheese and jalapenos, but I couldn't taste them so much.
I got the side of guacamole, which improved matters significantly. But, really, dipping it in guacamole kind of improves everything.
Next, to the Kentucky Bourbon Burger, which comes topped with pepperjack cheese, bacon, garlic-pepper onion straws and Kentucky bourbon glaze. The big, shiny poster assured me that the burger is "0 proof," even in its $6 incarnation and, no, I couldn't taste any bourbon.
Oh, it tastes distinctly of something, but it's not bourbon. Maybe a little more like liquid smoke and corn syrup: It was just too sweet for me. Not so sweet that I didn't finish it and sort of enjoy it, but too sweet to order again, even considering the bacon.
All, told, it was a whopping 1,380 calories and more fat than I'd like to tally up. Maybe next time I'll just cut straight to the milkshake.

On the off chance that it was just a mishap, I got a steak breakfast burrito at a different Carl's Jr. the following week, and the steak had the same bizarre flavour and texture.
Thinkin' I'll stick to the burgers at the burger joint.

When I still ate fast food, Carl's Jr was my favorite. I still have fond memories of the roast beef sandwiches they made with Ortega chiles many, many moons ago.
I also have very good memories of a Jack in the Box experiment called BK Broilers. The focus was adult. The decor was Starbucks cum fast food with a fireplace, leather-ish armchairs and wine service. The food was also slightly different than the regular J-i-t-B fare. I'm sorry they didn't make it to mainstream.

The sauce itself was vile. Usually fast food is just benign, not horrible, not great, but this was bad. The closest thing I could think to describe it was "fake alchohol taste". There was some odd medicinal undertone that made me thing they were trying to make it taste like they'd added a good shot of bourbon to the sauce just before they served it. I won't be trying it again.
Now I did like the onions and do like pepper jack. It might not be a bad thing if you subbed the BBQ sauce from the Western Bacon Cheeseburger.

Seriously guys, is this all you could come up with? what about going the other direction and making it a naughty thing? i.e. elderly women sneaking out of a health-care facility to have a bourbon burger at midnight or better yet, Diana Ross, sneaking out of a health spa for a bourbon...a hell scratch that...
