Michelle Obama Wants You To Eat Healthy

michelle obama
Less than two months into her term as first lady, Michelle Obama has emerged as an outspoken advocate for healthier eating. Last week Obama brought eight cases of fresh fruit to a D.C. soup kitchen, where she served steamed broccoli, mushroom risotto and homemade apple-carrot muffins as she talked about her desire to increase access to healthy food all over the country, reports the New York Times.

"We can provide this kind of healthy food for communities across the country, and we can do it by each of us lending a hand," Obama said.

This comes after a speech to the Department of Agriculture last month in which Obama talked up community gardens, followed a few days later by her press tour of the White House kitchen where chefs were preparing healthy items like creamed spinach sans cream. Obama has also talked to various magazines, from Vogue to Parents, about how she's struggled to get her girls to eat veggies and cut out sugary treats.

Apparently Laura Bush also served fresh, organic foods in the White House, but didn't discuss her family's eating habits with reporters. I think it's great that Obama's raising the profile of healthy food - this country could certainly use it. As the New York Times suggests, parents can always use the "But Sasha and Malia eat their veggies..." tactic!

Do you think Michelle Obama's healthy eating campagin will create permanent change in the way Americans eat?

An emphasis on how to eat healthy and be healthy without fear tactics would be very refreshing and welcome!

No. There are many, many celebrity spokespersons for the vegan and vegetarian lifestyle, and I don't see that having any lasting or major impact. I would like to see children in schools who admire the Obamas embrace a healthier eating plan, but it all starts with what's available in their lunch bag or at home. No matter how much they may admire her, if Mom and Dad put soda in the fridge and cheetoh's in the lunch bag, and as long as Pizza Hut and Pepsi are awarded contracts to have products in schools, they will remain doomed.

I love the fact that the top food trends this year involve local produce, as that will help all of us eat better. The more restaurants use local produce the more people are exposed to their benefits and flavor, the better.

However, just because I don't think the First Lady will change the country's views, doesn't mean I'm not thrilled that she's into nutrition and healthy eating... local eating as well. Every small step is an important one.

For one, it's become much easier to research information regarding the foods you choose to eat. It's great what Michelle Obama is doing, but rather than saying that her influence might cause a permanent change (or not), I think her actions much more reflect this cultural shift towards making wise decisions about eating.

Most people don't care what one woman in DC says about eating ... Unless she comes to your home & gives you the food for free, she won't make a difference ...

People will always eat what they want to or can eat ... And parents will always have a problem at one point of the game getting their kids to eat healthy ... One woman's NOT gonna change a thing ...

Now, where did I put that package of Double Stuf Oreos ??
