I'm in my home town of Chapel Hill, NC at the moment, and I just had lunch at a place called Sandwhich, which does rockin' gourmet sandwiches with interesting, mostly local ingredients. As I'm eating their meltingly tender pulled lamb with Moroccan prune chutney on foccacia I'm thinking, "this has to be one of the top 10 best sandwiches I've had in my life." And that's saying a lot, as I try to eat as many sandwiches as possible. After all, what's more gorgeously elemental than some yummy savory thing between two pieces of really good bread?
So I decided to write my Top 10 Sandwiches list (which is admittedly rather South-centric), in the hopes that you would share your own favorites. Then, in a few days, I can post a master list of Slashfood's Best Sandwiches of America.
Emily's Top 10 Sandwiches:
- Lamb tagine with prune chutney on foccacia at Sandwhich in Chapel Hill, NC.
- Green chile cheeseburger at Bobcat Bite in Santa Fe, NM.
- Muffaletta at Central Grocery in New Orleans, LA.
- Pulled pork at Jim Neely's Interstate Bar-B-Q in Memphis, TN (c'mon BBQ fans, I know you've got your own fave)
- Smoked meat sandwich at Schwartz's in Montreal (OK, so this isn't in the We'll just say "North America
- Brie, green apple, avocado and sprout sandwich at Venice Gourmet in Sausalito, CA.
- Everything bagel with cream cheese and tomato at H&H Bagels in New York, NY.
- Fried oyster sandwich at Calabash Seafood Hut in Calabash, NC/SC.
- Fried chicken biscuit at Sunrise Biscuit Kitchen in Chapel Hill, NC (honorable mention: Bojangles Spicy Cajun Chicken Biscuit).
- Lobster roll at The Red Barn in Ghent, NY (disclosure: this is my uncle's restaurant. And it's awesome).

Best sandwich of all time is the Monte Cristo at H.M.S. Bounty in Los Angeles, CA. Fully deep-fried, served with powdered sugar and jam, the way it should be. In all my years ordering Monte Cristos (which is obviously the best TYPE of sandwich), I've only once come across any that even came CLOSE to rivaling the Cristo at H.M.S.
It's so good I stole a menu from there years ago and still have it hanging in my kitchen today. And even though I've lived on the east coast for over half a decade, I still keep their number in my cell phone and occasionally call them up to tell them how awesome that sandwich is. Amazing.

- Jewish Hoagie - Koch's Deli, West Philly. Yeah, Katz's is great and I'll go out of my way to go there, but Koch's is another world. Their Italian is great, but where else can you get a Jewish Hoagie - I can't even remember all the meats - I think it's roast beef, corned beef, spiced beef and chicken liver.
- Beef on Weck - All Star Sandwich Bar. I'd love to go to Buffalo where the sandwich is originally from, but till then ASSB does a great job.
- Patty Melt - Can't name a specific place other than Duck's, a crappy chain in Chicago, but even when bad, they're good. Whenever I see it on the menu I have to order it.
- Dinic's Roast Pork Sandwich - Reading Terminal or South Philly.
- Corned Beef Special - pretty much any place in Philly but I'll pick Hymies in Merion. It's thin sliced lean corned beef (not that NY thick cut rubber) with cole slaw and russian dressing on rye.
- I've had great BBQ all over the south and been to a great many famous places, but my day-in, day-out favorite is still the KC Burnt Ends at Blue Ribbon Barbecue in West Newton. Also love their sausage sandwich.
- Good Morning Burger - Was very hungover after my brother's bachelor party and rescued by brunch at Mayrose in the Flatiron district - Big Ole Bacon Cheeseburger with an egg over easy on top.
And a shout-out to sandwich memories I still pine for:
- RIP: Elsie's Roast Beef Sandwich, Cambridge, MA - lean roast beef on a braided bun big as your head with pepper relish whether you ask for it or not.
- RIP: Buzzy's "The Pilgrim" - fresh roast turkey, stuffing, cranberry sauce in an average sub roll.

But the sandwich I crave the most is the grilled grouper sandwich at Harbor Docks in Destin, FL, where the catch to table time is often measured in minutes not hours or days.
The pork buns at Momofuku are good but too fatty for my tastes.
