Disney Hatches Eggs!

Disney EggsDisney is not just in the business of theme parks and animation. They are hopping to the beat of current food trends with their Disney eggs. Yes, they are actually selling eggs imprinted with different Disney characters. The best part? Buy the additional egg mold and make the eggs into little mickey mouse Disney icons.

Of the many current food trends, one of them is to buy local and organic. These eggs are neither. As fellow blog Jezebel asks, "Is this some kind of tie-in to a movie, or further proof of the evils of agribusiness and the coming apocalypse?" You can check out the commercial for these eggs at Jezebel. At first, I thought this was an SNL skit.

I can't help thinking that there is something intrinsically wrong with Disney advertising these eggs as extremely healthful with omega-3 and protein. While this may be correct, these eggs are just another form of big business mass producing industrialized foods with little concern for the environment, namely the food chain. Devoid of any sense of environmental responsibility, Disney is marketing these industrialized eggs to children. It's somewhat strange that they're selling eggs in the first place. But, if they're going to do it, can't they at least be organic? What do you think?

Should Disney's Eggs Be Organic?

Disney has commercialized fun in the worst ways and people are still paying through the nosefor it. As a child, I detested my parents for never taking me to Disneyland but now I kind of see their point.

That said, there are still very few places where a kid can have the kind of fun served up at a Disney theme park. It's also one of the safest places to take your kids. It's not just a corporate gimmick but for the most part it is a corporate gimmick.

I'm really finding it hard to read anything evil and nefarious into using cartoon characters to market a simple food. Why is this any more "intrinsically wrong" than Popeye spinach, Peter Pan peanut butter, or even Flintstones candylike vitamins?

I would like to know the price of the eggs, if they are in range with free range organic eggs or closer to regular eggs. I come from a poor community. A lot of people with kids can't afford to be "food snobs" and benefit from mass produced, commercial foods. Anything that will help those kids eat healthier is ok by me.

Who didn't scream for the latest character mac and cheese or happy meal when they were a kid? Why not Mickey Mouse eggs?

Millions of parents take their kids to Disney parks every year, where their kids eat Mickey-shaped eggs, pancakes, waffles, and frozen treats; this is just a way to bring that experience home for them. And I'd rather kids be eating eggs than sugar-laden cereals, really.
