Defeating the Smoke Alarm - Tip of the Day

Do you have a tendency to set off your smoke alarm when you cook?

smoke alarmWhether I'm roasting up some green coffee beans, or using my cast iron griddle for a nice piece of steak, my smoke alarm goes nuts. I tried putting up a curtain barrier (the alarm is in the hall around the corner) -- that helped a little, but was far from a problem solver. Then I started making use of my air cleaner.

Once I started strategically placing the air cleaner in my kitchen, the alarm stopped blaring. In fact, even when I forget and don't turn it on until after things start smoking, the alarm stays silent.

To prevent alarm blare-age:
  • Place your air cleaner between the stove and alarm, and set it on high. A good air cleaner (like my Sharp FP N40CX) will block most of the smoke that makes its way towards the alarm.
  • If you're cooking something on the stovetop, make sure you have covers to block the smoke.
  • If you have a hood fan, use it -- even if it is not vented to the outside. It's not ideal, but it does help. Just make sure that your filters are clean.
  • If you don't have one, or want to keep the air clear -- go old fashioned with opened windows and fans set up to circulate the air.
