Wine corks. They're something of a troublesome little doodad. There's not much use for them once the bottle has been consumed and yet their substantial feel that makes many of us hesitate before chucking them in the garbage. Some folks turn their cork collections into bulletin boards (with the help of some glue and an empty picture frame) or floor tiles but for others, those projects might feel a bit ambitious. Saturday, while browsing the merchandise at Foster's Homewares here in Philly, I spotted a fun little gizmo that allows you to turn eight wine corks into a trivet, perfect for protecting your dining room table from damaging hot pots and bowls. It's far lower effort than the bulletin board and makes for a fun topic of conversation at your next dinner party. I'm adding it to my list of things I long for (especially since I have a handful of corks leftover from an assortment of holiday celebrations).

I wish I had a picture but my friend's uncle makes art out of corks...I imagine his pieces can be used as trivets also. He fills a frame with corks and cuts them in all different sizes to fit. It's a cute idea!

For the past 12 years my husband and I collected corks. Since we drink a couple of bottles every week, you can imagine that that was a lot of corks! I always had the idea that someday I would use them to make a bulletin board, trivet, cork wreath, or (once the number became excessive) wallpaper a room with them. Finally, reality has reigned. Imagine the delight of my son's pre-K teacher when we delivered 3 big bags full of corks to her classroom. Those little corks will keep the little hands occupied and the minds busy for many years to come!!
Of course, now we get to start collecting all over again. I think I have 8 corks for this cute little trivet. Hmmmm...
