Best Cheap Beer: Thrifty Drinkers Unite

Well, T.G.I.F. has finally arrived, but today's economic news continues to be T.E.R.R.I.B.L.E. Used to be Friday was a chance to kick off the weekend party; now it just seems like the best day of the week to start drowning your sorrows.

About a month back, I pondered the idea of a post on the best bargain beers. Logistically, the project seemed like a nightmare: So many cheap beers come in 30 packs, and did I really want 29 Natural Ices clogging up my fridge? Plus, unlike typical beer reviews, reviewing cheap beers is subjective on two fronts -- not only what you consider "good," but also what you consider "cheap." Maybe you consider Miller Lite an extravagance when there's a perfectly good case of Milwaukee's Best on the shelf? I've yet to walk a mile in your shoes (though it is on my "to do" list).

So I figure, Friday afternoon, Slashfood readers are trying to whittle away the last hours of the work week, let's open it up to you guys. During the Great Depression fellow Americans bonded together to help one another. Let's help each other find some good drinkin' deals!

What do you consider to be the best cheap beers? What's a good bargain for the flavor of which you're a craver? Let us know in the comments! (Seriously guys, don't let me down: This post is nothing without your feedback!)

I've given my opinion on many types, and my cheap choices are PBR ($8.99 12pack), Ice House, Shiner Bock is quite good. Amberbock in 18 packs at less then $14 is probably what I'd say is best bang for the buck. I'm looking for suggestions at this point as I'm running out of beers available locally.

It's made by a New Orleans brewery that also makes Dixie, reputedly the worst beer made in America (but I was never brave enough to try it). I also agree with others that Red Dog is a fine cheap beer--great logo design on the cans--but I have not seen it in a store since I moved away from Alabama. I believe it is still sold in the South.

Mike, the only credible comments on this blog right now are the guys that mentioned Old Style, Hamms, Red Dog, and Old Milwaukee and all the other near financial collapse Wisconsin beers. Special prize to the guy that mentioned Strohs, that's a guy with heart. Please eliminate the homebrew from the discussion. If you have the patience for that you are not in the same social class that gets out of work on Friday with $5 in your front pocket and raging alcoholism in your back one.

At Thanksgiving last year we found an 9-11 year old can of Red Wolf (there's a difference from Red Dog) in my Dad's bar. My buddy drank it. Considering the negative interest associated with aged beer that may be the single cheapest beer of all time. Then there is my buddy Wally's grandpa that has a full white can with the word BEER on it in black left over from his general store in Collins, WI in the 60's. Here in Switzerland the grocery store Coop sells its own brand of beer that is pretty cheap but with the exchange rate doesn't really fit the purpose of this blog. High Life, you can't beat a 75 cent tapper, but I actually enjoy the taste of it, so I can't put that on my REALLY cheap list.

You want really cheap, head to one of the local city brews in Wisconsin (the run down factory cities, not Madison). Not sure if its still made but I think Kingsbury (formerly brewed in Manitowoc and Sheboygan, WI) has a shot at the title. Also anything made by Heileman's (Old Style which is referred to as "Old Stool" by some Wisconsinites and still drank at all my family holiday dinner tables, Schmidt's, Blatz, Ranier, Ranier Ice). Lastly, I'll throw out a blast from the past, Special Export, which I believe may still be made by Miller.

Knowing your style, I think that's more the type of list you were looking for.
