Tomatillos (and yes, I had to look up whether or not to put an "e" in that), are wonderful fruits commonly found in Latin American dishes. The flavor is a little more light and tart than a tomato, and the color is a beautiful green!My friend Kathy recommends substituting canned tomatillos, which you can usually find in the "International Foods" aisle, in any of your regular dishes. Fresh tomatillos are great, too, but they don't make much of a color contrast with, for example, a salad, or the lettuce in a sandwich. When I see a food, color is a big part of how I perceive it, so I see that as a major drawback.
But how about a plate of marinated tomatoes and tomatillos? Or a red leaf salad with sliced tomatillos? Now we're talkin'.
