Once you move beyond recipes and cookbooks from your own country, measurement systems come into play. Is it in grams, or pounds? Liters or ounces? Beyond that, what if your cooking vessels aren't quite the same as the recipe asks for?
Kitchen time should be spent in the act of cooking and baking, not math scribbles and stress, so here are some sites to make conversions easy. Once you've converted the measurements, be sure to either scribble them on the recipe itself, or on a paper you keep in the kitchen. I like to paste charts in the inside-doors of my cupboards for quick access. When a conversion isn't listed, I look it up, and then add it to the paper.
- Online Conversion -- One of the best conversion sites out there, you can surf through links for the type of conversions you need. In the realm of cooking, this includes weight-to-volume, butter, and temperature conversions.
- Infoplease offers printable conversion charts, while GourmetSleuth offers both pre-made charts and conversions performed right on the page.
- Don't have the right pan? Check out AllRecipe's pan conversion chart.
- Will temperature affect your sugar cooking? Joy of Baking offers a chart of what happens in both C and F.
