Top Chef Season 5, Episode 2 - Getting Crafty at Craft

Another week and another round of cooking and drama on the fifth season of Top Chef. This week the 15 remaining chefs must please the normal panel of judges (Tom, Padma, and Gail) along with guest judge Donatella Arpaia, a very successful New York restaurateur.

The Quick Fire Challenge once again has some New York flavor to it: the chefs must create a signature hot dog that will wow Padma and Donatella, and they only have 45 minutes with which to rustle up their doggies. The catch? Not only are they competing against one another but they will also be judged against a dog from Dominick's hot dog cart, as prepared by Angelina D'Angelo. Pretty stiff competition.

Read on to see who won the Quick Fire and who packed their knives and left at the end of the show (read no further if you haven't had a chance to watch yet, as there are spoilers ahead).

Everyone leaps into action, creating their own variations on the familiar hot dog. 14 chefs decide, wisely, to create their dogs from scratch. Jill, however, thinks that she doesn't have enough time for all that, so she cooks up some pre-made hot dogs for her Asian inspired hot dog summer rolls (long time Top Chef watchers should know where this is headed).

Stefan, the winner of the elimination challenge last week, whipped up what he called the 'world dog' made with italian sausage, irish cheddar, french bread, and served with a German beer. Despite needing a passport to eat the thing, Donatella wasn't impressed. Another dog that bit back was Jamie's pork and beef creation. Padma found a piece of bone in her serving, which is never what a chef wants to see (plus, I think we, as a culture, need to encourage models to eat more, and serving them food with bones in it just isn't the way to do that. Am I right, people?).

When all was said and done there was a clear winner: Radhika and her hot dog with Indian flair (it was served kabob style). She gained immunity going into the Elimination Challenge which is a very good thing for her (that's what we in the biz call 'foreshadowing').

This week's elimination challenge is a big one: the chefs will be serving lunch to 50 hungry New Yorkers at a New York restaurant. They must create a three course New American menu and each is responsible for one dish. They have 2 hours to prep and a total budget of $2500 for the group.

The chefs break themselves into three groups:

  1. Appetizers: Fabio, Hosea, Jamie, Melissa, and Leah
  2. Entrees: Stefan, Alex, Jill, Jeff, Gene
  3. Desserts: Carla, Ariane, Richard, Radhika, Daniel

After they break up into groups Tom Colicchio comes in to tell the chefs where hey will be serving lunch: Craft. For those that don't know, Craft is Tom's flagship restaurant, so the contestants know they will be in big trouble if they screw up. Adding to the pressure is the group of lunch goers they will be serving: 50 New York chefs who tried out for Top Chef but were rejected (talk about a tough crowd).

During the usual montage of shopping that precedes all the Elimination challenges I could tell who was going to be sent packing: Hosea or Jill. Why? Hosea wanted to create a crab salad that he has done hundreds of times but the store didn't have fresh crab. He didn't want to alter his recipe so he opted for canned crab (which he had never tasted before). Not a good idea. Jill, continuing to display poor judgment, decided to use ostrich eggs which she had never worked with. I figured that could turn out very well, or very poorly.

The food is cooked, the guests eat and quip (they were tough cookies with lots of folks saying, 'I could have done better than this!'), and the judges have their taste. On to the Judges' Table!

The judges tell everyone that the food, overall, was a disappointment. Jamie, Hosea, Ariane, Fabio, Carla, and Jill are summoned to the Judge's Table. First the good news: the judges liked Carla's apple pastry and they really loved Fabio's beef carpaccio (though in an amusing moment Fabio quickly jumped to the defensive of his dish before the judges could tell him they loved it). And the winner is... Fabio, continuing the European domination of this season.

That leaves us with the worst dishes of the night:

  • Hosea's crab salad which people found slimy
  • Ariane's lemon meringue martini which was say too sweet (Padma spat out her serving into her napkin)
  • Jill's ostrich egg soufflé which many compared to glue

Each chef defended their dish in turn, with Jill giving an incoherent defense that left the judges puzzled (Gail declared Jill's defense the lamest in all five seasons). And after some deliberation Jill was asked to leave.

What did you make of this episode? Do you agree with the judge's decision, or do you think that Ariane should have been given the boot (since Ariane declared 'I don't deserve it' when she found out she was staying)? Sound off in the comments!

Tip of the Day

Butterscotch sauce is a rich and buttery treat that makes a great seasonal dessert topper in place of chocolate or whipped cream.
