What's going to be in your candy bowl tomorrow night?

an assortment of Halloween candy
When I was in the fourth grade, my mother handed out travel-sized tubes of sparkly, bubble gum flavored toothpaste on Halloween instead of candy. That night, several kids turned her down flat and one particularly outspoken ghost picked up a tube, took a look at it and tossed it back in the bowl, shouting, "Hey! That's not candy!" After that, she returned to mini Reese's Peanut Butter Cups and snack-sized candy bars (in the days before "fun" size). We spent years using up that awful toothpaste.

During my adult years, I've never lived in a place where trick or treaters come to the door, so I've never had the fun of picking out candy and opening the door to decked out princesses and eye-patched pirates (sadly though, I've consumed more than my share of Halloween candy in those same years). This year, I'm hoping to live vicariously through the Halloween experiences of Slashfood readers.

What kind of candy are you handing out this year? Has the tightening economy impacted the contents of your Halloween bowl? Do you typically buy the same candy year after year, or do you like to mix it up?

Question..is it better to give a large handful of fun-size varieties of the above or one full size? Which would you prefer to receive?

We now hand out full-sized hershey bars, one box (36?) is more than enough for the whole night and the kids no longer just mumble 'thank you' and turn to the next house, they're genuinely excited!

More than we could ever need, but this is a very busy neighborhood for Halloweeen, and the last 2 years, we've run out of candy and had to turn to light off. How embarrassing!

We're using our mahogany caesar salad bowl as the candy dish. Right size, it's already in the front room, and hey -- it has its own stand!

This year the mix includes: 100 Grand, Nestle Crunch, M&M, Butterfinger, Snickers, Milky Way, Twix, 3 Musketeers, Starburst and Skittles. (I confess I've squirreled away some of the Butterfingers and Twix for myself...!)

I buy those little treat bags and fill them to the max....good stuff, none of those cheap peanut butter taffy things. Mini candy bars, toys, stickers.....even the little conffeti shaped like spookey spiders and such. I dont get too many kids, so at the end of the night they get two or three of these bags.....I love hearing..."that ladys COOL!"
