Tip of the Day: How to keep shortening from sticking to your measuring cup

Have you ever struggled to get all of the shortening out of your measuring cup? There are a few tricks that can make that struggle a thing of the past.

shorteningThe easiest method for expunging shortening would be one of those handy plunger measuring cups. But if you don't have one, try one of these tricks:
  • In recipes where eggs are also included, crack them in the cup, swish around so that the sides are well coated, and then pour them out and measure your shortening. It should slide right out.
  • Rinse your cup with very cold water before measuring.
  • Try water submersion: Fill a liquid measuring cup with the difference between the amount of shortening you need and the next rounded cup measure (for example: half water to half shortening for 1 cup, or half water to one and a half shortening for 2 cups). Then add your shortening until the level of water and shortening reaches that rounded measure.
  • Line the cup with plastic wrap, pack the shortening in, and then pull it out and slide the shortening into your recipe.
