Miso paste, like the one I use (at right: Shiro Miso), is amazing.You don't even have to put anything traditional in it. Just pop in in a saucepan with water, boil it up, and there's your broth. It's like a bouillon cube for lazy Asiaphiles.
In fact, one of my favorite everyday recipes is what I like to call Miso Lazy Soup. It involves taking whatever vegetables are in my fridge, and sometimes pasta if I have it lying around, and throwing it in the pan with a lot of miso paste. I also tend to add black and cayenne pepper and crushed rosemary. I know. Crazy.
You can also use miso paste to make traditional miso (obviously). In any case, it's a good thing to have in your fridge.
