Tip of the Day: Liquids that mix with corn starch

When it comes time to pull out the corn starch for thickening, try a more flavorful liquid to mix it with.

corn starch
Usually, we mix together some water and corn starch when it comes time to thicken a sauce or soup. But there are other, more flavorful possibilities to consider.

If you've created a flavor you are happy with, mix that with the corn starch -- there's no reason to add water to something that already tastes great!

If you'd like to add some extra oomph to your dish, try a more flavorful liquid -- like a wine or liquor, or broth.

However, do not mix the corn starch with acids like orange juice -- the acid will cut the corn starch's ability to thicken. If you're trying to thicken something acidic, try arrowroot instead.
