The first time I ever got tipsy, it was on a couple of glasses of cheap sparkling wine. While I had fun during the drinking, I felt fuzzy and headache-y the next day and so swore off bubbly alcoholic beverages. It wasn't until I got together with my boyfriend Scott that I was experienced good champagne. He's something of a fan and with him I've learned how tasty champagne and sparkling wine can be. Recently, a new book landed in my mailbox that made me even more excited about the world of fizzy, boozy drinks. Called 101 Champagne Cocktails and written by Liquid Architecture founder Kim Haasarud, this slim volume is bursting with creative recipes and gorgeous photography. There are a number of variations on the classic Bellini, as well as other fruit and melon-infused fizzy wonders. I'm particularly taken with recipe #93, the Sparkling Mango Martini (maybe I can make it while the purity.organic mangos are still in season) and #75, the Starfish Cooler (a 2007 Tales of the Cocktail winner).
If you're starting to think about gifts for the upcoming holiday season (it's never to early to start thinking along those lines, especially if you're trying to bargain shop), this book might make a great gift for the cocktail lover on your list.
