I have a friend who spent a chunk of her childhood years living in Indonesia. Of all the things she missed about life in the tropics, the mangosteen was the thing she longed for the most. When they finally became available in the US she was delighted and indulged in a few to satisfy her craving of many years. Having tasted one recently, I can understand why they haunted her for so long.
Thanks Dayna, for adding this gorgeous picture of some mangosteens to the Slashfood Flickr pool!

Mangosteens: The overrated fruit.
(But of course, that's just one person's opinion.)

I saw them recently at a korean grocery store in Cherry Hill, NJ...but they were frozen and there was no price tag...probably an arm and a leg.
But mangosteens are supposed to be extremely high in anti-oxidants. Definitely considered a superfood. You can buy the juice only through Xango. I have several friends who swear that the stuff prevents colds and reduces sickness time.
I can't wait till i go back to the philippines to have more of these. thanks for posting and bringing back the memories!
