Politics of the Plate: Dining on cloned beef

Gourmet's Barry Estabrook investigates the possibility of the presence of cloned beef's existence in the nation's meat supply. The following is an excerpt of his findings published on Gourmet.com.

I just found out that I may have dined on meat from the progeny of a cloned cow. You may have, too.

In January, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) decreed that meat and milk from cloned livestock was safe to eat. Last week, the agency went a step further and said that it was "theoretically possible" that the meat from the offspring of cloned cattle was already in the food supply.

9-11-2008 @7:24PM Michael Schmitt said... I seriously doubt that cloned beef is in the supply simply because it isn't economically feasible to do so. It costs thousands of dollars to clone an animal, and right now, cloning isn't 100% viable, so I really can't see anyone taking the money to grow another clone when mother nature (or a good artificial insemination session) can do the same thing...

9-12-2008 @9:25AM kelvin said... I'm all for genetically modified food. The more food we can produce the better. Provided they don't dump their surplus into the sea to keep the price up. Food should be eaten and not wasted. Bloody farmers!
