I first mentioned Faye Hess on this site about two weeks ago, when I confessed that she was my new cooking crush. Her self-published book, Faye Food, arrived in my mailbox yesterday and it has done nothing but fuel my infatuation with this deeply passionate and articulate cook. If you've been reading this site for any length of time, you'll know that my favorite cookbooks are ones in which the author's voice and personality play a prominent role. From watching Hess's cooking videos, I knew that she loved food and enjoyed nothing so much as that moment when she could make someone roll their eyes in pleasure from the taste of her food. I had hoped that her book would be written from a similar perspective and now, having spent a little time with it, I'm happy to say that it is everything I hoped it would be.
The book is organized by time of day, so it starts out with a handful of breakfast recipes and then moves forward through sandwiches, salads, soups, big salads, dinners and desserts. She also offers advice on stocking a kitchen (both in terms of equipment and pantry staples) and a 'how-to' section that instructs on how to make your own breadcrumbs and how to scramble an egg.
If you love food and find pleasure in sharing food with others, check out this book.
