Denny's and IHOP take back breakfast

IHOP Louisiana bananas foster
Over the past few years, fast-food joints like McDonald's and Burger King have cashed in on nutritionists' advice that breakfast is the most important meal of the day. At this point, they all have a breakfast value menu. So, it's no surprise that food service businesses, such as Denny's and IHOP, which built their restaurants on the fact that they provide breakfast, are getting competitive with fast-food alternatives. An article from the Baltimore Sun explains that Denny's is going to offer breakfast skillets for $5.99. IHOP is now selling more to-go breakfast meals.

Restaurant analysts state that Denny's and IHOP will have to compete with the convenience, speed and low prices available from their fast-food competitors. Nevertheless, they should probably also realize that they may be targeting a different demographic alltogether.

Would you sign up for Denny's Real Breakfast Club? Signing up means that they'd send you emails with promotions, news, and offers.

I think if they want to fix their problems, they'll need to work on that. I would sooner go (and have gone) to the dentist than go to Denny's. So, no, I would not sign up for Denny's Real Breakfast Club, as you might have guessed. ;)

IHOP isn't fine dining, but I haven't had the service problems with them that I have with Denny's. I do go there from time to time, though I can't say that I've gone during breakfast hours. Maybe I'll give it a try sometime.

How odd. Denny's has offered breakfast skillets for $5.99 since at least the last time I went there three years ago. Or maybe I just imagined it all, including the conversation I had with my dining partner about how unbelievable it was that you got so much food for $6 at Denny's.

Clicking through to the article, I find the Sun actually reported that they are going to *expand* that menu. It's a minor detail, but one worth getting right when that's the premise for arguing that Denny's is trying new things to compete. It's not that their concept is new, as implied by this blog post, but that they are growing the concept.

So it's breakfast at mom-and-pop diners for me. Here in the South, you get much better breakfast at the little local places because some distant corporate headquarters isn't dictating the menu. I can get sliced tomatoes with my eggs just by asking (for about 25 cents extra).

I don't know if it's just a Michigan IHOP thing or what, but every IHOP has awful service. 10 minutes to come and get my drink order? Over a half hour on a Wednesday afternoon to get a couple pancakes and eggs? Ridiculous. I never think of IHOP as a "to go" place.
