Vintage lunchboxes

images of different lunchboxes
A 1954 Superman lunchbox broke records when it sold for a whopping $11,500 in auction. Though most vintage boxes won't score a sliver of that price, many good-condition carriers still hold their weight in worth. Here's a countdown of classic lunchboxes' blue book value. Who knows? You might have some cold hard cash collecting dust in your attic!

Not only did it provide me with a hip-looking receptacle to store my midday meal, it also helped me make my first school friend, who had the exact-same lunchbox.

After I stopped using it around second grade, I lost track of it. My mom probably stowed it away in the attic of my parents' house, or it was sold in a garage sale. It won't fetch a pretty penny as a vintage collectible anytime soon, but I hope that wherever it ended up, someone, somewhere may have use for it someday and cherish it as much as I did.

But not $11k worth.

My Dad had etched my name on it the night before and I was one proud little girl! Today, the lunch box sits on a shelf in my office and I smile remembering those days of an innocent and carefree time in my life.

My parents bought it for her when she was in 1st grade, 1957. She really took good care of her things. When her son started kindergarden almost 20 years ago, she let him carry it on the first day. When she told me that, I said, "Are you crazy? That's a collectors' item, probably worth a couple of hundred dollars." That was the first and last day he carried it! I'd love to know what it's worth. Mine was a plain green plaid. I still have the box, but the Thermos is long gone. We never used the Thermos bottles, because we could buy our milk at school (4 cents a day!) and the Thermos bottles were just one more thing for Mom to wash out.
