Another weekend has rolled around, and we all want to eat fun, weekend-y food. Though I'll eat a veggie dog every now and then, I'm not a big fan of regular hot dogs. If hot dogs are on your weekend menu, though, this is for you.
Al Dente has put together a list of five hot dogs that'll kill you, literally...you know, if you ate one everyday for a long period of time. Anyway, all the hot dogs look like a good occasional indulgence (and I stress occasional). Maybe if you deserve a treat this weekend, you could try one of the kinds of hot dog covered. Except the hamdog. I don't think I could recommend that one in good conscience, ever. Perhaps you should also avoid a lard dog, but I'll leave that up to you.

Though the Velveeta and lard seems a bit, mmm, much (and this woman is judging a recipe contest?!) my buddies and I used to top our hot dogs with sour cream and onion dip for something we called Logie Dogs.

I have also noticed that some Southern cooks leave the rest of the world with the impression that all they know how to do is fry in deep fat. That is not true. There are Southern foods that don't get fried. It's just hard as heck to find them!
Since moving to New Mexico, I have started eating healthier. More green chiles and less frying. It's a mouth-watering combination that keeps your arteries cleaner in the long run.

When I was a kid (about 40 years ago) a pretty common weekend meal was hotdogs with American cheese slipped into a slash in the hotdog and wrapped in bacon held on with toothpicks then baked in the oven. Mmmmm, almost as good as liverwurst and baloney fried with onions...
