After a number of months of hemming and hawing, I finally bit the bullet and joined an organic home-delivery fruit and produce service. It's awesome, and completely worth it. However, it means that I have to keep on top of my cooking. With this week's box scheduled to arrive this afternoon, I needed to clear out the remaining pieces of last week's score. That meant finding a use for some broccoli.
Seeing that I was also craving one of my super-delicious elk burgers, I decide to pair the two. I somehow knife-wrestled a patty from the frozen pile without losing a finger, and then grabbed the green stuff. The broccoli was fried until soft, and then set on the cheeseburger with some Kozlik's blonde mustard (so good), tomato, and mayonnaise. Teamed with some fries seasoned with ground anardana (pomegranate), smoked paprika, salt, and pepper, and this was the best burger and fries that I've had in eons.

Darrell's in Halifax, Nova Scotia wins the best burger award almost every year for this combo.

They also had one with Damson jam and Dijon mustard on it. Can't remember the name of that one but it was sensational!
This was a place that started in Toluca Lake when Paul Newman said he wanted a decent place to eat when he was on the Warner Bros. lot and provided the financing. They had a simple menu but everything they served was outstanding and creative.
There was also a location in Hollywood with the enclosed patio built around an enormous oak tree. It was on one of the city's busiest streets but with a great burger sitting under that fabulous tree listening to classical music you would never have known.
Don't know how long it's been gone but I miss it still. The Toluca Lake location has been bought and tries to operate in the same vein but it's just plain NOT.
Anyway, try a burger with jam and mustard while I enjoy the sweet memory.

Ah, Hampton's in Toluca Lake and Hollywood! First place I ever had an 8 ounce burger; the best.
They also had bottles of Lafite or Mouton for, I think, $99 a bottle which was high in the early 80's. Never saw anyone order this but I imagine it was for someone euphoric over a "deal" just done at either Warner Brothers or Universal.

Stopped out for dinner one night and had the Terrace Stacker, a cheeseburger topped with onions, mushrooms and, oh yeah, two slices of pork roll. If I have to tell you what pork roll (aka Taylor ham) is you probably won't appreciate this wonderfully South Jersey burger concoction.
