Living on the 20th floor of an apartment building, with absolutely no access to anything resembling a garden, my heart burns with jealousy over all the gorgeous outdoor space that so many members of the Slashfood Flickr pool have. I regularly see fabulous grilling set-ups and verdant garden patches that never fail to send me into fits of envy (someday, I took shall have outdoor space!).
This perfect little tomato comes from Joy, who grew it in her yard. So lovely! Thanks Joy, for adding your tasty pic to the pool!

Having limited space is no excuse! I've been enjoying the same perfect, juicy, TASTY cherry tomatoes all week, from my tomato plants that are growing upside-down in 5-gallon buckets on my back deck. I also have fresh onions and cucumbers, lettuce (romaine and regular leaf lettuce), green peppers, and even potatoes (growing in an 18-gallon Rubbermaid tub).

Bless you Tracy, sadly it is effort that is the largest impediment. Fear of the unknown keeps people from trying thing that seem foreign.
I would think it is too late in Philly for Marisa to plant anything now but I hopes she takes this to heart and tries it next year. A fabulously successful technique.
Imagine, a vegetable with flavor! Everyone will be jealous, and you will have many new 'friends'.
Indeed, with only one tomato bucket, one bell pepper bucket, and one vine (squash, cucumber, etc - grow two or three plants in a hanging basket with something like fishing line or a trellis to train the plants to grow on), you will have a killer combination.

Just to clarify, it's not fear of the unknown that keeps me from gardening, it's truly the fact that I have NO outdoor space. I don't have a terrace or a balcony. I'm not even allowed to hang window boxes out of my 20th floor apartment. I do have a collection of plants inside my apartment, as well as an indoor composter that I use to process all my vegetal waste. But currently, in my life, there is no place for me to grow anything more ambitious than basil. If I had any access to the outdoors, I would be growing tomatoes and zucchini in a heartbeat.

Oops, that presumes Marisa has a balcony with southern exposure.
One advantage of buckets is you can start early and bring them in when there is a chance of frost.

Man, that is the definition of no outdoor space.
I hope I didn't offend. I didn't mean for my comment to be personal but more the general public. You seem, from the few blogs I have read, to be more the adventurous type, at least when it comes to food.
I enjoy your articles, please my apologies for wording that poorly.
