Got a tough stain on your kitchen counter top? Instead of pulling out rough and potentially toxic cleansers, make a paste out of some water and baking soda. Let it sit on the stain for 15 minutes or so and then gently scrub with a soft sponge. The stain should lift away. Is the half onion in your fridge giving an unappealing aroma to your sliced watermelon? Place an open box of baking soda in the fridge to absorb those odors. Replace it once a month or so and make sure not to use it in your baking, as it holds on to the stinkiness.
It also works well in deodorizing your laundry and carpet. Add several tablespoons to the washing machine to remove the smell of mildew that can hang on your bath towels. Dust your carpet with a layer, let sit for an hour and then vacuum to remove the smell of pets.
Here's a tip from Wikipedia that I just learned, "A solution [of baking soda] in warm water will remove the tarnish from silver when the silver is in contact with a piece of aluminium foil."
