Tip of the Day: How to know what to buy organic

So you want to buy at least some organic food, but you can't afford to be/don't want to be the person buying organic garlic powder and organic jelly beans. How do you know when it's best to go organic and when it's absolutely OK to go conventional?

To help in the decision-making process, Greenopolis has a listed the foods which are fine to buy conventional, along with explanation of why going organic is unnecessary in these cases. OK non-organic foods include avocado and banana (thick peels prevents pesticides from reaching the fruit), as well as cabbage, asparagus, broccoli and onions (naturally insensitive to bugs, so they don't need a lot of pesticides).

The site also includes lists of foods which should be bought organic (assuming you do believe that pesticides are harmful to your health and/or the earth, which is a whole other kettle of worms). These foods are listed in order of their pesticide loads, with peaches, apples and nectarines topping the fruit list and bell peppers, celery and lettuce topping the vegetable list.

They might be OK from the consumer viewpoint, but what about the people who grow, pick and handle the stuff?

Bananas especially are treated with all sorts of chemicals before they are exported.
