Remember Hydrox? AKA "kosher Oreos?" Well, after a long hiatus, these chocolate sandwich cookies are back for a limited time in honor of their 100th anniversary. The Kellogg Company, which produces Hydrox, have launched an "America's biggest Hydrox fans" essay contest, with a grand prize of a trip to New York and a six-month supply of cookies. The contest ends July 14; see Hydroxcookies.com for details.
Personally, I'm thrilled. Growing up in a Jewish, though non-kosher, house, there was always a jar of Hydrox in the pantry. My mother, a native New Yorker, simply preferred the soft, appealingly grainy creme and firmer cookie of her own childhood snacktimes to the slightly larger Oreo. Eventually I too came on board. Now, with Hydrox gone, I sometimes try to substitute various "organic" sandwich cookies and Trader Joe's Joe Joe's. But they're never the same!

As a kid, they were a staple in my house, but, my 4 sisters, and 2 brother loved them, and still do. When I got married, the hubby loved them..now, fast forwarding to 20 years later, they are still a staple....as my 3 wonderful, annoying, loud, obnoxious teens love them as well! And I still hate them...but, can down a sleeve of oreos with a quart of milk......(not that I do), my point it, Ores in my opinion rule!!!!!

My grandfather was a lifelong, loyal Nabisco employee, so that was one reason -- you didn't bring Sunshine or any competing brands into the house. Those few times we got to taste a forbidden brand of cookies or crackers were guilty pleasures. When we tasted hydrox we just thought "Eww. No." Never liked 'em. Never missed 'em.

Mom was very frugal...but I can honestly say that I liked Oreos better....If it was the right week!!!!

What I don't understand is they dropped this product at a time when everyone was looking for a healthier snack food, and these were definately the answer. A toasted crisp biscuit dough rolled out with a layer of raisins, and then another layer of biscuit dough. Yum

No wonder todays Oreo's don't taste as good as the ones I had as a kid. Which means that Hydrox "might" now stand a chance beating out the Oreo on taste.

The icing was the key, I always did like the more solid sugary icing on anything, not the fluffy style. I find it has less a salty taste, and doesn't coat your mouth with that lardy feel. (The icing on the cakes in the grocery stores are nasty that way.) But it's all changing with the removal of hydrogenation and lard, have to reevaluate. Glad to see it's making a possible come back, that was all there was when I was a kid, no Oreos then...
In the San Francisco area, we just lost Mothers cookies to Canada, they moved their operation. We're exceeding the cost of living here, even for doctors.
I'm not liking where things are headed at all. Try to find a general item on the shelf these days that is not made in China, and now it is biting us with low grade and dangerous chemistry in the products. Like a run-away train...
