Remember Hydrox? AKA "kosher Oreos?" Well, after a long hiatus, these chocolate sandwich cookies are back for a limited time in honor of their 100th anniversary. The Kellogg Company, which produces Hydrox, have launched an "America's biggest Hydrox fans" essay contest, with a grand prize of a trip to New York and a six-month supply of cookies. The contest ends July 14; see Hydroxcookies.com for details.
Personally, I'm thrilled. Growing up in a Jewish, though non-kosher, house, there was always a jar of Hydrox in the pantry. My mother, a native New Yorker, simply preferred the soft, appealingly grainy creme and firmer cookie of her own childhood snacktimes to the slightly larger Oreo. Eventually I too came on board. Now, with Hydrox gone, I sometimes try to substitute various "organic" sandwich cookies and Trader Joe's Joe Joe's. But they're never the same!

Wasn't Hydrox a product of Sunshine Bakeries, rather than Kellogg"s?

Not to offend anyone who grew up with these (I've never heard of them until now), but the name 'Hyrox' sounds more than like something in the pharmacy than a cookie.

Keebler bought 'em in 1992. Here's a great bit of Hydrox history: http://money.cnn.com/magazines/fortune/fortune_archive/1999/03/15/256478/index.htm

Actually, Hydrox came out several years before Oreos. The name Hydrox was just a combination of Hydrogen and Oxygen.

Hey tom,
I don't think Drace can't read, I think he/she made a typo. Guess not everyone can be as perfect as you. Oh wait...perhaps, you shouldn't throw stones from your glass house; since apparently you're too much a freakin' moron to know that your original message had already posted.

I'll definitely have to look for Hydrox in my supermarket. They have always been my favorite cookie, much better than Oreos. Wish I had some right now as I go down for a glass of milk.

The only reason Oreos were not kosher was because they were made with lard or animal shortening, and anything from a pig is definitely not kosher. Whereas Hydrox was made with vegetable shortening. Notice that I said Oreos "were" not kosher, since for at least 10 years now they've used veggie shortening as well -- as have most cookies because of cholesterol/saturated fat concerns.

As I recall, there was lard in the Oreo filling at one time, but that has changed and they are now parve, I believe.

I grew up on Hydrox cookies and always preferred them to Oreos. I hope we will be able to buy them on the regular grocery shelves for the six months they will be out.
