Exactly one week from today, I'll be in San Francisco taking a class in artisan bread making at the San Francisco Baking Institute. I'm so excited that I'm positively giddy.
I've been planning this trip for some time, and I do have some ideas about how I'm going to spend my free time in the city. However, there's only so much you can learn from tourist websites, so I need your help: if you have any suggestions on food related destinations I want to hear from you. What are your favorite San Francisco foodie haunts? Where would you eat in the city? Where would you go for food souvenirs?
I'll have a lot to do while I'm in San Francisco, but your suggestions will make the trip even better!

Just did a week in San Fran at the end of June and we went there on a neighbor's recommendation. The line can get long fast at peak hours (though we were fine at 11:15 or so). Really loved the rice chowder and whatever the heck my main dish was called.
We also hit the Ferry Building for lunch a lot. So many great and varied options.

Anchor & Hope makes a sea urchin dish and a smelt dish called "fries with eyes" and I still dream about 'em to this day.

The place I used to go I think was called Saigon Sandwich, and the pork and chicken banh mi were both unbelievably good (and unbelievably cheap). I could (and almost did) eat nothing but those sandwiches for several days running...

I agree with the votes for House of Nanking... the grimiest, craziest, most delicious Chinese place in town. Just go in and say "you choose", and you'll be fed well.
Find a taqueria... any will do... and get a big burrito. Nobody does it like SF.

...thanks for the timely post and all the awesome comments too...tons of new ideas. So envious of the bread course...looks like a blast. (I am a super-novice home baker; can't wait to get at some of the SF sourdough)
Already had rezzies for A16, but tons of new ideas here.
We are also trying Cafe Claude, on the recommendation of our hotel's Manager @ The Chancellor on Union Square...
